Looks like the European Union is really intent on choking the life out of digital content creators.
The new law is called VATMOSS, and it affects ANYONE OFFERING DIGITAL SERVICES/GOODS ONLINE, and especially crowdfunding platforms like Patreon. Basically the content creator or artist has to collect personal information from every single patron, donator or client based in an EU member state and file VATMOSS taxes starting from January 2015.
Not only is this a completely preposterous burden to place on content creators, it is extremly unfair to citizens of the EU wishing to support their favorite artists. It is very scary and pretty much a death knell for many of the artists who depend on patreon to support their art. Many conent creators with 1000+ patrons are especially going to feel it, as you have to collect information on every…single…one… of those 1000 patrons, EVERY SINGLE MONTH to make sure they are from the EU - and if they are, file taxes on them. This is an administrative black hole and completely negates the point of the support, which is so the artist can GET ON WITH THEIR WORK instead of filing irrelevant paperwork all month.
Many of the fellow content creators have already closed their patreons because they cannot take on the liability of filing taxes for their patrons, which is a damn shame. Its not just a crowdfunding issue either, if you want to be an independent business and sell your art through a digital storefront, you must monitor and keep a record of every single EU client, or ban them completely from purchasing your stuff. There’s no way around this dinosaur legislation which the fine geniuses at the EU in Brussels thought would be a great way to stimulate the digital economy. Way to go, you bunch of incompetent pieces of garbage.
